What's the Story with the Art?

In 2017, I started working on a series of 4 paintings for Advent for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Just as I started painting the Annunciation, where the Angel Gabriel tells Mary she is pregnant with Jesus, I found out I was pregnant with my youngest son, Winston. I found myself enthralled and captivated by the birth narrative as I studied Luke 1-2 closely and walked alongside Mary and Elizabeth as they were pregnant with Jesus and John. Inside, God was birthing something new in me too - not only my son, but this creative work.

Since then, InterVarsity Press has contracted me to create a series of devotionals for Advent called Making Room in Advent: 25 Devotions for A Season of Wonder (September 2022). In the last year, I set out to create new paintings and writing for the series. In total, there are 18 original paintings that capture the story in Luke. As I read the stories of Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, Anna, Simeon, and the Shepherds, I found myself deeply connecting with them and awed by God. I hope you will too. If you purchase the full set of 18 paintings, you can follow along the story in Luke 1-2 as a companion while meditating on the paintings.
