This painting was created for IMBY homes - tiny homes for the homeless. With each IMBY home, the new owner will receive a print as a housewarming gift.
As I created this painting, I thought a lot about Psalm 84:3 which says…"Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar…"
I imagined this space of home, belonging, and nearness to God’s presence. I saw a mother bird tucked away in a safe place to have her young near God’s temple. A place where she could start a new life, a new chapter, a family. I imagined her hovering, watching with anticipation for movement beneath the surface of her eggs.
I want you to consider the vantage point of the chick for a moment. What thoughts or feelings surface for you here? What might she feel when she breaks through the egg?
That first burst of light will likely be blinding. The chill of the cool spring air may make her want to crawl back in her shell and hide. She will likely be frightened. She is vulnerable and scared. But she will also discover a world that is so much bigger, brighter, and more colorful than she could ever have imagined inside her shell. She will learn that she has wings, and that she can fly.
In preparation for this painting, I watched several minutes of footage of newborn chicks in a nest. They looked so helpless. So fragile. They moved little except to open their mouths wide for food. But what I saw was a mother bird, fully present and attentive to her chicks. She offered the warmth of her body, she watched them closely, and she fluttered back and forth to and from the nest to provide nourishment. She protected her chicks under her wings as they matured into the birds they were meant to be.
